Inspections Officer

About the role

At West Northants Council, it’s about our people and the difference they make. As an Inspections Officer, you’ll play a vital role in supporting the accuracy and integrity of the Council Tax and Business Rates property base across West Northamptonshire. Your work will help ensure properties are correctly assessed, income is accurately collected and the Council can continue delivering essential services to our communities.

This is a varied and rewarding field-based role that combines site inspections, customer interaction and investigative work. You'll have the opportunity to work independently across West Northamptonshire while contributing to the Council’s financial sustainability and helping ensure fair and consistent taxation for residents and businesses.

What will you be doing?

You’ll carry out property inspections across West Northamptonshire, visiting new developments, empty properties and commercial premises to gather information, verify property status and support accurate Council Tax and Business Rates assessments. Using your attention to detail and understanding of relevant legislation, you’ll collect and record evidence, prepare reports and maintain accurate records that support decision-making and audit requirements.

Working closely with colleagues, residents, businesses and external organisations, you’ll help identify changes to properties, verify reliefs and exemptions, and support the maintenance of accurate tax base information used for financial planning and forecasting. Alongside your inspection work, you’ll contribute ideas and improvements that enhance service delivery and the customer experience.

About you

You’re a motivated and organised individual who enjoys working independently and taking ownership of your workload. With strong communication and interpersonal skills, you’re confident engaging with a wide range of customers and stakeholders and can explain information clearly and professionally.

You have excellent attention to detail and are comfortable assessing information, maintaining accurate records and applying legislation in a practical way. Experience conducting property inspections, site visits or similar field-based work would be beneficial, along with the ability to work confidently as a lone worker.

Most importantly, you’ll bring a proactive approach, a commitment to excellent customer service and a desire to make a positive contribution to our communities, reflecting our THRIVE values in everything you do.
