About the role

Are you ready to take on a challenging and rewarding enforcement role, helping to protect the local environment and uphold high standards across West Northamptonshire?

We are seeking a motivated and resilient individual to join our Neighbourhood Warden Team in a role that places strong emphasis on investigation, evidence-gathering and formal enforcement. You will play a key part in identifying, addressing and preventing environmental crime within a defined area of West Northamptonshire, working both independently and alongside partner agencies to achieve measurable results.

This role involves conducting investigatory enquiries, gathering evidence, interviewing individuals, preparing enforcement paperwork and taking proportionate formal action in line with legislation and council policy. You will be responsible for tackling offences such as fly-tipping, littering, dog fouling, accumulations of waste, commercial compliance and antisocial behaviour, using a full range of investigatory and enforcement powers. Our Neighbourhood Wardens hold Accredited Person status under the Police Reform Act, and full training will be provided to support you in developing the legal and procedural skills required.

While the post is predominantly field-based, requiring confidence working outdoors in all weather conditions and undertaking extensive foot patrols, the role also involves essential office-based duties. These include completing accurate enforcement documentation, preparing legal paperwork and progressing cases through formal enforcement pathways.

What will you be doing?

You will provide a uniformed high profile presence by patrolling and act as point of contact for local businesses, local residents and the wider community and support their involvement in community ownership. 

You will gather evidence in respect of incidents of environmental defacement including fly tipping, littering and other environmental crime and where possible will take direct action. 

Liaise with local businesses and ensure compliance under current legislation.  

You will liaise with the Police and other agencies and internal services to inform of, or investigate offences and take enforcement action under appropriate legislation, including issuing fixed penalty notices and gather evidence for further legal action. You will ensure that all such action is taken in accordance with the Council’s enforcement policy and procedures.   

You will be expected to support local area based initiatives and projects such as Northampton Town Centre environmental policy and cleaner communities.  

About you

  • Experience of working in a community environment and dealing with businesses and members of the public in difficult situations.  
  • You must be a good team player to support the wider team across the whole of WNC. 
  • Knowledge of Environmental Crime.
  • A valid current driving licence.
  • Excellent verbal and non-verbal communication /interpersonal skills to forge relationships with the local community and businesses and encourage motivate and enthuse in order to facilitate positive change.
