About the role

The Pensions Service has an exciting development opportunity for a motivated individual to join our Administration team as a Pension Support Clerk (Apprentice). This is an 18-month apprenticeship, during which you will study towards a Level 3 Business Administrator qualification.

This role is perfect for someone looking to begin or progress their career in business administration while gaining hands-on experience within a friendly and supportive team. A flexible approach is essential as you will gain experience across a wide range of pension administration tasks.

We are a very friendly team and there is plenty of opportunity for ongoing development within the Pensions Service.

What will you be doing?

As a Pension Support Clerk (Apprentice), you will work within the Operations Team and support the smooth running of our pension administration services. Throughout your apprenticeship, you will learn to undertake a variety of administrative tasks, including:

  • Allocating incoming emails to the correct teams

  • Answering telephone queries from members

  • Sorting and distributing post

  • Returning original documents to members via recorded delivery

  • Responding to basic queries via email

  • Supporting members with our self-service system

  • Updating member records accurately

  • Processing refunds of contributions

This customer-facing role is key in ensuring that cases are handled efficiently—either resolved at the first point of contact or allocated promptly to the appropriate team.

About you

You do not need prior experience in pensions or business administration—we will provide comprehensive training and ongoing support throughout your apprenticeship to give you the skills and confidence you need to complete the role. However, experience working in a busy customer-focused environment, or demonstrating the ability to stay calm under pressure and make timely decisions, would be beneficial.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Excellent attention to detail

  • Strong communication skills across all channels

  • A willingness to learn and take on new challenges

  • Good organisational skills and the ability to work as part of a team
